My research focuses on applying the Value Sensitive Design approach to the synthetic cell. Broadly, this involves developing frameworks that integrate societal values, such as safety and responsibility, into the design and development of synthetic cells.
Hi, my name is Miriam!
I studied Molecular Medicine and Innovative Treatment, as well as Philosophy, at the University of Groningen before joining the Department of Values, Technology & Innovation at TU Delft as a PhD student. I'm working under the supervision of Jeroen van den Hoven, Lotte Asveld, and Steffen Steinert.
My research focuses on applying the Value Sensitive Design approach to the synthetic cell. Broadly, this involves developing frameworks that integrate societal values, such as safety and responsibility, into the design and development of synthetic cells. My interests span the governance and accessibility of synthetic biology, as well as biosecurity, safety, and risk assessment. I'm also very passionate about science communication and public philosophy, as I believe science and philosophy are ultimately shared human endeavours that should belong to everyone.
In my free time, I enjoy Muay Thai kickboxing, playing piano, singing jazz, and going to all kinds of live music events. When I can get a bit farther afield, you’ll likely find me traveling, skiing, hiking, or doing anything else that involves the great outdoors!
